DESIGN CHALLENGEHow might we create a unique logo that aligns with Sleepy Cat Books’s values?
Sleepy Cat Books is a local, indie bookstore located in Berkeley, CA that sells new and used books. The owner has a cat that often lounges around in the store, and customers are welcome to pet it.
IDEATION AND CREATIONIn the design brief, Sleepy Cat Books asked for a cat and a book to be present in the logo. They also wanted something that felt warm and cozy and would help the store feel welcoming.
The team began by creating a collaborative inspiration board to throw ideas around. We decided to create a logo that centered around an image rather than text. We split up and individually sketched logos ideas and then came together afterwards to vote on a single design to expand upon. After receiving feedback from the design mentors, we finalized and vectorized the logo, created mockups, and made a slide deck, and presented our design to an audience that included a panel of judges.
FINAL DESIGN
REFLECTIONThis was my first time designing a logo with a team in a design-a-thon. Due time constraints, we had to forgo a lot of the discussing and jump straight into the designing. Although there is more I wish we could’ve done, i.e. develop a more thorough brand identity, I was very proud of what our team managed to accomplish in just several hours. We even won a Judge’s Choice award! Overall, it was a very valuable learning experience, and I’m eager to work with more local businesses in the future.
